The St. Agnes House of Lexington, Kentucky

By: Murrel Wisdom

As a person who comes from the Eastern Kentucky region, I understand the health concerns that occur within this population of Appalachia.  Many hospitals in Eastern Kentucky are small, non-trauma units designed for handling mild illnesses, such as the flu, certain breaks, and overall pediatrics.  Major care is far from the region, and the main place that these citizens turn to is of course what many consider to be the mecca of the Commonwealth: Lexington, Kentucky.

Adopt a New Outlook on Life

According to the ASPCA, 62%, or 3 out of every 5 people in America, own a pet. That means that 3 out of every 5 of you who are reading this right now have a pet at home. By what means did you get your pet (e.g., adoption, breeder, etc.)?

The Experience of 4-H

Everyone has a nonprofit organization that’s near and dear to their heart.  For some it is the American Red Cross, for others it may be Habitat for Humanity, and a few might like volunteering at the local soup kitchen.  For me, though, the nonprofit group that I have always been close to is 4-H.

Best Friends Day Center

Did you know anyone that has Alzheimer's disease or is affected by Alzheimer's disease? According to the Alzheimer's Association, 1 in 8 people will have Alzheimer's in America and there are currently 5.4 million people in America that are living with Alzheimer's; that’s just the United States alone. These staggering numbers can leave one wondering, is anybody doing anything to battle this disease? The Alzheimer's Association of Lexington is one among many other affiliated Alzheimer's Association organizations that is working to help people in the community affected by Alzheimer's.

Trinity Christian Academy

Today’s world is no place for a person who is not well versed in his or her own beliefs. More and more people are searching for accredited private schools for their child to attend in order to strengthen their beliefs in the hope of preparing them for the “real world” after high school. Trinity Christian Academy (TCA) provides this particular education.

YMCA

When you hear “the YMCA,” what do you think of? Most people would say a gym or the song they play on an endless loop at weddings of distant relatives, but what you do not think of is the YMCA Youth Association. The YMCA Youth Association “develops engaged citizens and servant leaders, inspired to affect change in their school, community, state, nation and world” (YMCA, 2012). The Youth Association provides programs connected through schools designed for middle school and high school aged students to learn more about their state, government, community and world.
